Tax refunds: ask before you buy
Confirm the exact store, eligible goods and paperwork.
Shanghai’s official guidance says eligible overseas visitors must buy at least RMB 200 of qualifying goods in the same designated store on the same day. The rules include visitor eligibility and departure conditions; reaching the spending threshold alone is not enough.
Ask the store for the required invoice and refund application. Eligible goods must remain unused and leave China with you within the stated time limit. Keep goods accessible for Customs inspection before checking baggage.
Refund rates, handling fees and service arrangements affect the final amount. Follow the official guide for your departure port rather than assuming every purchase returns the same percentage.
Your quick checklist
- Ask this branch whether it participates
- Obtain the invoice and application
- Keep eligible goods unused
- Allow time for Customs and the refund counter
